The Children’s Academy offers a comprehensive private child care and preschool program to all local residents including residents of WV, OH, and PA! We provide small classrooms with appropriate age divisions and staff/child ratios for the optimal learning environment. Children are accepted from six weeks of age through age 12. Our staff consists of Certified Early Childhood professionals, many of who have been employed with The Children’s Academy since our inception! Our teachers are dedicated to the success of each child who enters our building. Each classroom provides a state-approved, age-appropriate curriculum as well as assessments and evaluations that monitor our success. Our students will embark on an educational journey in a structured and fun environment! In addition, this facility collaborates with our state USDA Child Food and Nutrition program and provides all children with a healthy breakfast, snacks, and a hot lunch daily.

Our Programs

Infant Programs

Trust your baby (age six weeks to 12 months) with the loving staff at The Children’s Academy! Our infant department is licensed for seven children with two accredited West Virginia infant and toddler trained teachers. Children receive intensive, quality “primary care” enhanced with individual weekly lesson plans and quarterly evaluations and assessments. The Children’s Academy also embraces our collaboration with WV Birth To Three Intervention Services. Therapists offer developmental appointments on-site for children who need additional services.

Toddler Program

Our toddler program provides a welcoming, independent environment for eight children aged 12 to 24 months. These children are encouraged to explore diverse environments that promote specific learning techniques in areas of cognitive, social/emotional, and gross motor skills. Individualized lesson plans introduce new concepts in a caring atmosphere with two accredited WVIT-trained teachers. This classroom utilizes The Creative Curriculum, a state-approved educational curriculum with quarterly evaluation and assessments.

Two-Year-Old Program

Small environments ensure success with two-year-olds! We offer two classrooms that each house eight children accompanied by two accredited, professionally trained teachers in each classroom. Specific age-appropriate weekly lesson plans are developed and implemented, offering opportunities for academic awareness and successful social/emotional relationships with peers and teachers. Significant emphasis is spent learning self-help skills (potty training) in a positive and rewarding manner! The West Virginia state-approved Creative Curriculum introduces preschool-oriented lessons in fun, hands-on, all-inclusive formats. Individual evaluations and assessments also ensure quality learning at all levels!

Early Headstart Classroom

The Children’s Academy contracts collaboration for our early education population aged six weeks to 36 months with the Northern Panhandle Early Head Start Program. This program enhances our quality curriculum with additional programming elements, including weekly safety monitoring, enhanced curriculum checklists and staff training, daily observations, curriculum implementation, and evaluations through the Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment system. Eligible participants receive other benefits such as free diapers, wipes, formula, referral services, etc.

Three Year Old Program

The lower level of our facility is home to two classrooms, each housing 10 three-year-old students via one accredited, professionally trained teacher. Our private preschool program utilizes a combination of the Frog Street Preschool curriculum aligned with the state-approved Creative Curriculum. Our children are exposed to a full day of scheduled academic and social/emotional group activities. These weekly lesson plans provide each child with learning opportunities that include Music and Movement Circle Time, specific learning centers offering experiences in dramatic play, blocks, literacy, small and gross motor skills, and math and science exploration.

Four Year Old Program

The Children’s Academy is proud to collaborate with Hancock County Schools for Universal Preschool services. Enrolled families experience the luxury of receiving a free West Virginia-approved quality preschool environment via their child’s home public school with the benefits of wrap-around before and after child care services at a private tuition rate. Children do not require any transportation to or from our facility while parents are at work. Enrolled students receive the same Hancock County School’s state-approved curriculum, educational resources, special education services, and certified Early Childhood Education teachers and co-teachers. Our program is fully enrolled and on a waitlist annually!

School-Age Program

We offer before-school, after-school, and full-day holiday and summer care programming to students enrolled in Weirton Elementary School, St. Paul Elementary School, St. Joseph Elementary School, and Weir Middle School. Transportation is provided via Hancock County Schools daily. We are licensed for 15 students with one teacher. Children will receive recreation opportunities as well as homework assistance and age-appropriate lessons. School-age children will receive breakfast, meals, and snacks, too!
